A story rooted in history.

In 1498, Vasco da Gama landed on the shores of Malabar. This single event turned out to be one of the most prominent incidents that took place in the last millennium. Gama was the first European trader/ navigator who directly travelled to the Indian subcontinent across the horn of Africa, disrupting the monopoly of middleeastern traders in the Arabian Sea and in the Indian Ocean and opening the sailing route directly from Europe to South Asia. The port at Kozhikode acted as the gateway to the medieval South Indian coast for the Arabs, the Chinese, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and finally the British

Gama was welcomed by the Zamorins of Calicut, the rulers of the great kingdom of Malabar and the city of Calicut, aptly dubbed ‘the city of spices ’, which was famous for its array of spices, coconuts and herbs. Malabar was and still is a hotspot for the highest-quality collection of Indian speciality ingredients.

In the 21st century, that is what makes the products of Malabar and Kerala ( the modern Indian region including Malabar) the first and the only priority for traders and sourcers from all around the globe. Recognising the history of the country, acknowledging its colonial past with contempt but also accepting underlying truths of quality, trade and stories shared across the shores, Zamorin & Gama, stands up to occupy the original space of speciality southern Indian food ingredients across the world.
