In 1498, Vasco da Gama landed on the shores of Malabar. This single event turned out to be one of the most prominent incidents that took place in the last millennium. Gama was the first European trader/ navigator who directly travelled to the Indian subcontinent across the horn of Africa, disrupting the monopoly of middleeastern traders in the Arabian Sea and in the Indian Ocean and opening the sailing route directly from Europe to South Asia.
